Skills training and continued education doesn't necessarily mean learning something new. An important part of employee development is simply brushing up on old skills.

At a senior level, employees don’t always have their hands in the day to day operations. While they may have started out creating project proposals or learned how to make a budget plan, it might’ve been years since they last practiced this skill. By providing opportunities for “refresher courses” for higher ups, members have a holistic look at the company work overall, illuminating pain points or new ideas senior employees weren’t aware existed.

On the other side of the coin, it’s important to make senior level employees aware of new innovations or processes within their industry or position. Staying up-to-date on the latest project management software or sales technique, even if it’s not used in an employee’s day-to-day, can improve productivity or welcome new perspectives in the workplace.

Considering their rank in the workplace, leadership skills should be heavily prioritized for senior employees. While it’s likely people at a senior level have some natural leadership skills under their belts, there is always room to grow and learn.

Beyond the standard leadership groups or corporate coaching, workplaces should also consider conflict management workshops or work with a coach on team mediation. Top-level employees are not only leaders in the company, but should also be proficient in diffusing conflict and managing a team to run more effectively.

Remember your team at the top is an example to the rest of the company. The way they lead, resolve conflicts and communicate will naturally be mimicked by everyone else.

Looking to the Future

Similar to a mid-level employee, senior employees can experience feelings of stagnation as they gain clout in the workplace. To some, it may feel like there’s nowhere higher to climb, which can be detrimental to company productivity, as well as workplace satisfaction.

There is always a new goal to stretch for, and it’s important to remind senior employees of that. Engage upper leadership in strategic management, or have senior level employees work one-on-one with a career coach to hone in on new professional development goals.

Senior employees set the standard for behavior for the rest of the company. When you have goal-oriented and career focused senior level team members, everyone else will follow suit.
